Google Glass | Google did it again

Google did it again. Today, Google got the world talking about nothing else than them. They’ve reached the headlines in every newspaper in the world and got a 2 minute video seen by millions of internet users. This is the dream of every marketer.

Did it cost them the insane amounts other companies pay for TV advertisement space? No. Did they have to analyze the market and segment it into groups to make the perfect ad for their targeted group? Maybe a little bit.

But really the only thing they needed to do was developing a little website (http://www.google.com/glass/start/) and shooting a video to have the world talking about them.

That’s the way the current internet society works. Create valuable content (funny, amazing, hot...) and people will start sharing your content around the world trough social media. Is it that simple? Yes it is.

Ok, we have to admit Google has style. The website they created is so incredibly simple it becomes beautiful. That’s something we’ve almost only seen of Apple lately. The video is shot in some of the most amazing places in the world, but is it really that special?

Google Glass
The thing that helped them to go viral was also the product they promote in the video. Rumor has it that Google never really had the intention to produce the ‘Google Glass’ until they saw how interested people were. Suddenly, the millions spent on R&D seemed like a good investment after all. It makes their brand known. Will there ever be a Google Glass? We don’t know.

But what we do know is that this video, created by Google went viral within a few hours. That’s no coincidence. That is knowing the power of buzz marketing and that’s the subject of this blog. Buzz marketing is a way to get your product/brand known by a huge public with minimal costs. You create something that people want to share and talk about. That way, your message will be received by millions of people without ever using the traditional advertising methods (TV, radio etc.). This blogs aims to give you recent examples of this marketing strategy. You’ll be filled in with the most incredible and amazing advertising tricks companies can pull out of their sleeves. We are four students in Marketing and we will each do one post a week.  So stay tuned!
